Trip overview
Recommended routing based on services visible in 2026; exact December trains open much nearer departure.
Route
Provisional international flights
Direct services are preferred. These are planning selections, not bookings: schedules, five-seat availability and the open-jaw fare must be reconfirmed before purchase.
| Leg | Provisional flight | Local schedule | Duration | Fare status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Outbound Sat 12 Dec 2026 | DIRECT Juneyao Airlines HO1662 Manchester (MAN) → Shanghai Pudong (PVG) Boeing 787-9 currently indicated | Depart 10:05 Arrive 05:05 on Sun 13 Dec | About 11h | Provisional. Google Flights displayed the flight but no bookable direct fare. Working expectation: compare against the previously observed ~£550 per-person indication. |
| Return Sat 2 Jan 2027 | DIRECT Cathay Pacific CX219 Hong Kong (HKG) → Manchester (MAN) Airbus A350-900 currently indicated | Depart about 01:00–01:05 Arrive about 07:55 on Sat 2 Jan | About 14h50–14h55 | Provisional. Exact-date Google Flights indication was £1,129 per adult one way; do not treat that as the target open-jaw fare. |

- Schedule, fare and five-seat availability to reconfirm before booking.

- Shanghai Tower observation experience (1.5–2h including entry), Pudong and Huangpu cruise (about 1h).

- Tiananmen security buffer + Forbidden City (3–4h); add Jingshan (1–1.5h).

- Summer Palace (3–4h), hutong or free time, then Beijing West → Xi’an sleeper.

- Allow roughly 2.5–4h hotel-to-hotel by ferry or road/bridge, including border formalities.

- Historic Centre: Senado Square, St Paul’s and Monte Fort (3–4h); lunch, then travel.
- Allow 2.5–4h hotel-to-hotel by ferry or HZMB coach. Reach Hong Kong well before New Year crowds.
- Victoria Peak + tram/queue (3–4h), Star Ferry (30–60m) and harbour/Tsim Sha Tsui (2–3h).
- Return to the hotel early, collect luggage and leave for the airport around 21:00–21:30 for the after-midnight flight.

Transport decisions
Door-to-door comparisons include typical station/airport access and check-in buffers. Exact December 2026 services may differ.
| Leg | Recommended | Planning duration | Sleeper / group of 5 | Scenery judgement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shanghai → Beijing | CR400 FUXING 350 km/h limited-stop G train | 4h18–4h40 train; ~6–7h door-to-door | Overnight D sleepers can exist seasonally, but skip: the daytime express is the trip’s verified speed showcase. | Mostly developed lower-Yangtze and North China plain; daylight is pleasant but not a key beauty leg. |
| Beijing → Xi’an | OVERNIGHT SLEEPER Classic Z/T service if available | ~11–13h overnight; daytime G alternative ~4h10–6h | Soft sleeper is normally 4 berths per lockable compartment. Five cannot share one standard cabin: request one full cabin of 4 plus one berth in the adjacent cabin. Allocation is not guaranteed. | Night misses plains, Yellow River corridor and glimpses near the Taihang/Loess regions, but not a singular must-see panorama. Time saving wins. |
| Xi’an → Chongqing | DAYTIME D/G RAIL | ~5–6h | Not a useful overnight length; use seats together. | Keep daylight: Qinling / Daba mountain terrain, valleys, viaducts and tunnels are among the route’s best window scenery. |
| Chongqing → Guilin | DAYTIME HSR | ~4.5–6h | No time-effective sleeper; reserve five adjacent seats as soon as sales open. | Keep daylight: Guizhou hills and karst approach are more worthwhile than saving this half-day. |
| Guilin → Shenzhen | FUXING / HSR | ~3–3.5h from Guilin; add local transfer | No sleeper case; five seats in a 2+3 second-class row may be requested but not assured. | Daylight recommended for karst and river landscape leaving Guilin. |
| Shenzhen → Macau | FERRY / ROAD | ~2.5–4h hotel-to-hotel | Book five seats together; passports and immigration required. | Day journey; sea/bridge views depend on mode. |
| Macau → Hong Kong | FERRY / HZMB COACH | ~2.5–4h hotel-to-hotel | Book five seats; allow New Year’s Eve crowd margin. | Ferry offers harbour/estuary views; coach crosses the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge. |
